No cats in middle column/cats have own page?

I'm setting up a cart, but I have a problem with my layout.

I only want my cats and sub-cats to show on the left sidebar, NEVER in the middle column. Right now if you click on a cat, the subs fly out underneath on the left sidebar (fine), but they also show in the middle column, not fine.

I also want my primary cats to do the following when clicked:
On the left sidebar, show it's sub cats; in the middle column, show a customized page.

Is this possible, and if so, how?

And where can we see what you have??

Before I suggest a code edit I am thinking that there is an admin switch for this but as you know there are many and I can't recall what.

You could always turn the subcategories OFF from appearing in the middle of the page ... with a handy dandy switch in the Configuration ... Product Listing ...

Now I just need to know if there's a way to assign a page to a category so when someone clicks on a category it shows a page in the middle column.
