Coupon/Gift on account creation

Hi,

I've been searching to see if someone has already done this. I'd like a way to automatically provide new accounts with a $5 gift cert.
Or, a $5 gift cert when they refer a friend and the friend buys something.
Before I jump in and start hacking, I wanted to see if someone had already done something like this.

As a customer retention mod, i am also considering a monthly givaway by which a recipient (we sell flowers) can enter a code into the website and qualify for a free monthly giveaway. As part of this, I would capture their e-mail information and also try to get them signed up as a customer by giving them a gift voucher.
Ideally, this would be automatic.

Ideas, thoughts??

The sending of a Gift Certificate or coupon on sign up is built in - Just create your coupon or GC and turn it on.

Also, how do you get the GC for 1st customer referral working?
