Configure Tax For New York State residents

HI,

I am trying to set up my taxes on Zen Cart so that a customer who makes a purchase lives in New York State they are charged local sales tax, but everyone else who orders from out of state pays no sales tax.

Under Zone Definitions I have set up a New York Tax Zone

Under tax class I have a Taxable Goods category.

Under Tax Rates I have set up the New York tax rate of 8.375%.

If I add taxable goods to all the products in my store then it will add New York sales tax to every purchase not dependent on the zip code where the purchaser is buying from. How do I differentiate it?

See the New York Sales Tax thread. You need to set up separate tax zones and rates so that all of the jurisdictions are handled correctly; the rate varies from around 7% to 8 5/8% last I knew, and you don't want to charge someone too much or they may complain and get you audited.

Is there a way that the information or the database that contains the configured tax information for all 65 counties in New York State or Ohio can be copied and shared with others?

I expect it could be done by someone experienced with writing SQL queries. It would certainly be handy, as long as it was kept up to date.

My developer can do it if someone has the data and will let me use it. Then I can make it available to all zen cart users and save time.

Otherwise I can spend the time to input the info and make it available.

I think once individuals have the info they may have to update it if it changes, but that will be much easier than writing it from scratch.

If any New York State based Zen Cart user is willing to share the tax info so I can make it usable for all, let me know.
