What is an attribute?

Hi i'm new and i can't find a good explanation of what is an attribute and the meaning of option name and option value and attribute controller...i would like to add in one page of my site a free download of music and one which you have to pay.I know that is very much related on the attribute section but i can't figure out the structure of it.How they are related?

I'm sorry but i'm new to zen cart and i find only this part a bit hard to get... the only result i get by myself is a radio/dropdown button that doesn't start any download...I followed all the tutorials but it just don't work...any help:frusty:

Ok , i have it on my page but it doesn't start the downloading...attribute settings are enabled,no redirect,no streaming.
The page of my site is this you can see on the bottom the attribute but there's no download button and nothing happen if you click on it...the link to the filehas been checked and the file is present in download folder...what am i doing wrong?:frusty::frusty::frusty::frusty:

You have set it up as though visitor is going to
purchase the rar file as free download..by clicking
add to cart button..if you wish to offer free download
without add to cart.. provide link to file via product description.

I found the problem...there was a mistake in the payment method(free or not) which it didn't show up so for that reason was not possible to conclude the checkout and download option.
