Please help with a slow site.

Hi can some one help?

I am fairly new to Zen Cart. I set up my site last year and all has been well. however I have noticed recently that it has been getting slower. I think this may be a database issue but do not know where to start. I have no knowledge of Mysql or PHP. Have just follwed the tutorials to date and all has gone well with setting up the store.

I am on a budget so commercial help is probably to expensive. I have just activated the displaying of Parse time etc to get an idea of what is happening - see below:

Parse Time: 6.080
Number of Queries: 130
Query Time: 0.10915561125183

Is this slow? or am I looking in the wrong place?

I also find that the admin pages are slow same sort of Parse time as above.

Have the following error when I go into MYPHP admin area:

"Your PHP MySQL library version 5.0.27 differs from your MySQL server version 4.1.20. This may cause unpredictable behavior"

I have contacted my hosting provider about this (pulse, use to be supanet) and the person who replied did not bellieve that this woul cause a problem, however he has forwarded my email to the developers to look at further.

To start of.

  1. can some one tell me if these times are slow
  2. recommend where I start with Mysql so i can improve my sites performance.

If you want to check it out it is:

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Turn GZip ON ...

Turn that Tracker script you have in the footer OFF ...

Does this speed things up?

This is a reason I am suspecting that script in the footer ...

The images are gorgeous, by the way, and so nice and tiny ...

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Well the script in the footer is the google analytics code

I would suggest switchig back to the classic template and checking speeds

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your replies.

I have tried what you said Barco and switching to the classic template made no difference in speed. still getting Parse times of around 6 seconds.

I don't know how to measure it but my static HTML pages load nice and quick.

The Code in the footer is indeed Google analytics I would preffer to leave it in. I would imagine that such a widely used tool would not be causing this problem? Maybe others can comment have you had a problem with Google analytics slowing your site?

I am using another tracker called supertracker. But intend to remove it completely - just not sure how yet have to do some research. I have remove all the rows from the database and optomized the database via the Zen admin screen. It has shown maybe a very slight improvement - but I had not measure the Parse time before and after.

Any more ideas appriciated

Rgds,

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Is your database on the same physical server as the rest of the site?

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Also - probably won't makes lots of difference as your page is under 100k - but your banner.jpg can be changed from jpg to gif and saved with 64 colors instead of 256 and save an additional ~17k

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Kim,

I am assuming that the site is all on the same server, but I guess it would do no harm asking my host (Pulse)

Ok yes I could make the banner a bit quicker to run, but I don't see that it will make that much difference.

I may look at doing this latter just as a matter of course proviided it does not change the look of the site.

I have had a reply from my host today saying they have looked at the site and can not find anything wrong? I think everyone who has looked at this post has found high parse times. I have sent them some figures to see what they think.

Is there anyway I can test to see if the server is a slow runner?

Rgds,
Brian.

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Look at the times here:
Parse Time: 6.080
Number of Queries: 130
Query Time: 0.10915561125183

Your Query Time is a 10th of a second to get the data from the database tables ...

The Parse Time is 6 seconds ...

If you peek in your Admin and look at the Tools ... Server Info ... what is the load time on your site?

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Ajeh,
Thank you for coming back with more info, I do appreciate everyones help.

When you say peek in admin, do you mean ZEN Cart admin?
I have had a look in server info and can not find the load time?
could it be called something else?

I have also tried enabling Gzip compression but it made no difference. So I have disabled this. I think it is because some sort of compression is already enabled (Output_buffering 4096?)

I could not find anything relating to the Load time on my domain hosting admin page.

I have had a look at some performance data on the MYsql admin page, about cache sizes, no table open etc... Some of it is marked in red with comments that indicate something might be wrong. I will try and past some of the info here latter to see if any one thinks I should change something.

thanks,

Re: Please help with a slow site.

Most sites you can obtain the Load Averages in the System Info ... unless your hosting provider is hiding those from you ...

As a test ...

Go to your Configuration ... Website Maintenance ... and set your shop Down for Maintenance ...

Is the site faster?

Set the Right Column to hide ... faster?

Set the Footer to hide ... faster?

Set the Left Column to hide ... faster?

Set the header to hide ... faster?

Don't forget to take it off of Down for Maintenance ...
