Re: Popup if customer leaves without purchase

How can you pop anything to a customer who left........

I would be VERY aggravated if I decided to leave and you prevented this with a pop up..... More importantly uncle Google is not very keen on these tactics either.

Re: Popup if customer leaves without purchase

Hello Melanie,

" How can you pop anything to a customer who left........"

I believe this is done by other websites.... maybe having a hidden message box.....

"I would be VERY aggravated if I decided to leave and you prevented this with a pop up..... More importantly uncle Google is not very keen on these tactics either."

Google never crawls this page. This page is for a customer who is on the last step of ordering. Many of these customers think their order has gone through and leave w/o an order..... then call/email and wonder where their order is. Or I would at least like the ability to have a final message before they abandon their order if they have changed their minds at the last second.

If it is triggered from the page/website... Google knows it is there and they are certainly not fond of hidden anything.

Use any PPC? Anayltics? Then Google does in fact crawl this page, just not index it.

Efforts to attract attention to the proper action locations and proper flow and direction in checkout are far more fruitful for your efforts. Just changing the color of your checkout button can substantially decrease your abandonment rate.

If shoppers are leaving without confirming... then either they are getting a surprise at the end or your checkout is unclear about the procedure... a pop up will not fix that.

Checkout optimization is an excellent tool.... Very small changes can have great big effects. There are some obvious things that we all know and some softer and niche related things we will never know until you checkout on your own cart 50 or so times and beg ten or twelve others to test it for you as well.

I'm no expert... and honestly one thing that works on one cart can fail miserably on another... But I am a quick study.

So before you spend time and energy trying to rescue a lost sale... Spend a bit preventing them as well.

and checkout the recover cart sales mod... I really think it is likely to be far less abrasive and more successful as well.

Cheers,
Melanie

Re: Popup if customer leaves without purchase

I was thinking of something similar, to offer a 10% discount code as an incentive to change the customer's mind. If they say "no thanks", have it continue where they were headed, but if they accept, have it stay on the checkout page.

I've seen reputable companies do this on their sites and it is very similar to the in-person tactic that others use. As, in, "let me call my manager and see if there's anything we can do" and suddenly you have your discount.

As long as you make it easy to say no thanks, I don't see the problem.

Re: Popup if customer leaves without purchase

I know that I can be sort of testy about this stuff, but my attitude is: 'Why did I have to start to walk out before you offered me your best price?'.

All I ask from any seller, online or not, is to be treated with honesty and respect, which means, among other things, no games.

It may have been I was leaving for one last check of your competition's price - a popup like that would only guarantee that I wouldn't be back.

Re: Popup if customer leaves without purchase

We have seen some success with the "Recover Cart" add-on module.

The only problem is it's not automatic and you have to wait until the customer's cart times out before they show up in recover cart.

Another issue is that some customers leave the site and call in and place the order, so if IT sends out the message without checking with Sales the customer gets confused about whether or not they really placed an order.

But we keep trying...
