Default text in dropdown (not to pass on cart)

Hi all,

I have the following dropdown attribute option:
[please select...]
version 1
version 2
version 3, etc

The problem in my case though, is that this dropdown is not mandatory attribute for purchasing, meaning that customers can still buy the product even if this attribute is left unselected.
So, when the product is added to cart, the above attribute (specifically the text "please select") is added as well.

I tried to edit the yellow attribute's flag, setting the Used For Display Purposes Only option to YES but then when going back to product and press the add to cart button, I get the error "Please correct the following:
On the Option for: Edition Upgrades Invalid Selection".

The reason I am not using check boxes is because the possible selections are so numerous.

Thanks in advance

Re: Default text in dropdown (not to pass on cart)

A Dropdown always results in a selection ...

If you mean you have one of your choices in the Dropdown labeled as: please select

Then you need to set that as:
Display Only YES
Default YES

and while optional, but it makes sense, I set the Default/Display Only selection to be:
Sort Order 0

Thanks for your reply but as I said to my original post, this selection is not mandatory which means that the customer can buy the product without selecting anything on that selection; so it stays as "please select". My problem is that this phrase "please select" is transferred to the cart under the name of the product that is purchased.
What I need is if there is any way this selection when unselected is not transferred to the cart.

Perhaps change it to NONE ...

The attribute is going to get transferred ...

You could look into checkboxes as an alternative ... they only get added when checked ...
