Linking Products

Can some one show me an example where you would link a product to another. What is it used for? I'd love to see a website that uses it.

Also, where do I go to do this in Zen Admin?

Link a product to another how amd why? There are a number of different ways of doing this depending upon the relationship between the products and what yoiu are aiming to achieve by the link.

The "link" feature in Zencart is not the same as "linking" different products (as Kuroi says, how and when to "link" depends on your objective).

The default "Linked Product" feature in zencart is a mechanism to enable a single product to be featured in more than one category.

This has a marketing advantage...

Say for example, you are selling power tools.

You also sell power tool accessories (such as drill bits, planer blades, jigsaw blades).

You could set up your webshop to have the following categories:

• Power Drills
• Power Jigsaws
• Power Planers
• Powertool Accessories

You would list your drill bits, planer blades and jigsaw blades under "Powertool Accessories" as their main (master) category.

But it could also be a good idea to show drill bits alongside power drills as well.

So, you could LINK the drill bits to the Power Drills Category, as well as have them feature in the Accessories category.

So, the drill bits would feature in BOTH cagetories.

As a LINKED product (not as a DUPLICATE product), the product data is managed in their master category listing... so if you changed the price of a drill bit, you would need to change only the data in the master category listing for that drill bit.

The new price will then also show in any LINKED reference. This ensures that you need only edit ONE data set.

If you DUPLICATE the product, (as opposed to just LINKING it), then you will need to edit both data sets if you want the data to be consistent.
