I think I broke it!

yeah... i think i broke my store! I'm VERY new to this website stuff. Like REALLY new with code etc. I was following the tutorial for editing the footer in Zen version 1.3.8a

Here is the footer text (after I replaced my woops)

define('FOOTER_TEXT_BODY', 'Copyright © ' . date('Y') . ' <a href="' . zen_href_link(FILENAME_DEFAULT) . '" target="_blank">' . STORE_NAME . '</a>. Powered by <a href="http://www.zen-cart.com" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a>');

I removed this part - '</a>. Powered by <a href="http://www.zen-cart.com" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a>'

When I hit save and refreshed my store to see if it worked, the entire storefront turned white. No content at all showed up. So, I went back in and added that info back to the code. I know the CODE is right, not sure of spacing tho?! When I try to save I keep getting this error message -

This webpage is not available.

The webpage at http://host352.hostmonster.com:2082/frontend/hostmonster/files/savefile.html might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

More information on this error

My website https://www.swirlydoos.com/store is still showing as a white page... please help!?

eta - this code is in the Languages/english.php file. THANKS!

Re: I think I broke it!

What are you using to edit the file, and what are you using to save it?

The server control panel (cPanel or whatever) is not good for editing PHP files.

Re: I think I broke it!

a couple of tips about editing files:
when you make a change Always
save the file (eg. filename orginal.ext.)before you
mess up that way you can go back.

download a editor for code that way you won't get some weird
charcater or extra line when you save your file
its not funny to up load and have your site
break due to a extra blankline at the end of a file
you just worked on.

find a html or css site for referance.

and the </a> needs to be at the end of your <a herf
it "closes" the command you started with the <a herf

Re: I think I broke it!

"Cpanel"

There's your basic problem. You really need to have some proper editing tools for this job. You need to FTP the file to your home pc, edit it in a good text/file editor, and FTP it back to the server.

This doesn't have to be hard, or expensive. Filezilla is a very good FTP program you can download free from sourceforge.net, and either Notepad++ or CrimsonEditor are good text editors, also free from Sourceforge.

Re: I think I broke it!

Thanks Glenn. I do have filezilla, just didn't know I needed it. Like I mentioned i'm "BRAAAAAAAAAND new" to this and guess I just learned one nasty lesson the hard way right? Is there any way to pull the original code for languages/english.php to restore the file?

Re: I think I broke it!

the key is here ,you said:
I removed this part - '</a>. Powered by <a href="http://www.zen-cart.com" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a>'

you should only remove the '</a>
from here is what you want to remove.
. Powered by <a href="http://www.zen-cart.com" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a>'

do you have a backup,un altered copy of the file you changed ?

Re: I think I broke it!

no.......... oh good Lord I feel like a dip. And before I started posting here tonight i was saving original code on windows notebook. (not the ++ notebook either!)

All I did was save a copy of the code I removed - '</a>. Powered by <a href="http://www.zen-cart.com" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a>'

in case I needed to put it back.

Re: I think I broke it!

in case you mess up.

just unzip a copy of zen cart the same version that you are using and get the file you are looking for, you could then compare the two files with a file compare program like "beyond compare 2" or just replace the file with the original from the unziped zen cart files

You said you had removed
I removed this part - '</a>. Powered by <a href="http://www.zen-cart.com" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a>'

You should have removed:
I removed this part - Powered by <a href="http://www.zen-cart.com" target="_blank">Zen Cart</a>

What remains is:

define('FOOTER_TEXT_BODY', 'Copyright © ' . date('Y') . ' <a href="' . zen_href_link(FILENAME_DEFAULT) . '" target="_blank">' . STORE_NAME . '</a>.');
