Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)

Hi,

richphitzwell:

Found an issue man. If you have multiple of the same product names in the same sub, it kinda misses the others.

Perhaps using model number or both product name and model number instead would be better?

This has been covered here several times before. No-one can give a good reason for having products on their site, in the same category, which have the same name. It makes no sense. How would a blind person know which product is which?

You must either name your products correctly or you'll have to manually change the URIs for the different products.

I suggest naming your products correctly.

In version 4 the software will tell you that you have got products with the same name in the same directory and insist that you manually rename the product(s) or manually enter the product URI Mapping.. as a matter of logic and principle, there will never be support for automatically generating different product URI mappings for products with the same name in the same category.

All the best...

Conor

Re: Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)

Ill give a good reason, I dont control the product names. The Manufacturer does and in certain industries its very common to have a common product line name with different models.
for instance
http://www.google.com/search?q=esq&um=1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbs=shop:1&source=og&sa=N&tab=if&biw=1135&bih=709#sclient=psy&hl=en&biw=1135&bih=709&tbs=shop:1&source=hp&q=esq+beacon&aq=f&aqi=g7&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=9a6a61114e7dc301

or
http://www.google.com/search?q=esq&um=1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbs=shop:1&source=og&sa=N&tab=if&biw=1135&bih=709#sclient=psy&hl=en&biw=1135&bih=709&tbs=shop:1&q=citizen+watches+nighthawk&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=8df4f9e173c59dcc

but really you can think of cars as well. an f-250 has multiple model numbers.

Anywho, Could you let me know how to manually change it or is it possible?

Hi,

richphitzwell:

I understand where your reasoning is coming from but it's not a good reason. What you are saying is that the model name is part of the product's name.

Again, how would a blind person pick the car model they want from such a list? I believe we should treat blind people equally.

You should add the model to your product names as that's what the "real" product names are.

richphitzwell:

Anywho, Could you let me know how to manually change it or is it possible?

I'd still advise correcting the name of the product to include the model part of the name but you can simply manually enter a URI for each product instead of ticking "autogenerate".

Or you can tick "autogenerate" but once you get to the "preview" page, copy the autogenerated URI, go back to the product page, paste in the autogenerated URI and modify it to add the model number or add something else to make it unique.

I have to point out that the fact that you'd be adding the model number to the URI to make it unique lends towards the logic that the product's name is "wrong" in the first place! :)

All the best...

**Perhaps using model number or both product name and model number instead would be better?**Why?? the modules as it sits has enough flexibility that you can simply enter your own URI for these products.. There's no issue here at all.. Though it really doesn't make sense to have products with duplicate names in the same category anyway..

Re: Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)

Trust me when I first saw how the industry names their products it just seemed odd that they can have 10 or so watches with the same name and in many cases its not just black, silver, gold... it may be a completely different shape...but its been like that for hundreds of years and not much little me can do about it.

As for the why, I am doing these manually but I can see that this is going to be ongoing and half the time I dont know up front how many a certain name will pop up as they could be spread out through the catalogs of some of these manufactures so Im requesting since you would probably know right of the bat what file to modify to add to the url mapping the route/route/product name_model number.

I completely understand your view and I agree with it, Im just asking if this is something I can modify for this particular industry while it probably wont fit for 90% of the installs out there.

Re: Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)

Just my three cents, but since this module is flexible enough to allow you to create custom URIs with your own custom value, what can't you simply create the URI at the time you create the product witht he model included in the URI??? I think Conor has made it clear he won't be putting any time or effort into custom variations for how the module generates the URIs..

That is indeed what should be done.

I wasn't saying that, I may add that functionality in the future.. however I won't ever support the creation of an autogenerated name based on the category path and product name when two products in the same category have the same name. The ability to append the model code may be added but it's not a high priority as, as yo rightly point out, people don't have to use autogenerated URIs, they can enter their own if they want this kind of behaviour at this time.

All the best..

I understand what you are saying but I don't support backwards ideas! :)

If you go into a shop selling these items are you saying there is no way to order a particular watch? That you must simply say the same name and take what you are given? Whatever colour or shape it is?

I didn't think so.. so what do you ask for?

Then that is the real name of the product! :)

I'm sorry but I don't provide free custom coding for anyone. You can modify the source files yourself of course, take a look in the functions file in the admin/includes/functions folder for the autogeneration code and change it as desired!

**I'm sorry but I don't provide free custom coding for anyone.**You KNOW I understand.. however, THIS is what I meant by my previous statement.. and this is understandable since there is a MORE THAN adequate workaround for the time being.. The model number is part of the product record.. It wouldn't take much work using your module to simply create a custom URI which includes the model number if that's what the shopowner desires..

Conversely, adding the model number to the title seems like the shortest path to using the autogenerate feature without hacking your code. The first client I used this module on opted to modify her product names versus having multiple products in the same category with the same name.

I have this to add, IF and when you do add model number support, it should be an admin configurable option whether or not it is a part of the URI as not all shopowners use the mdoel number field..

Re: Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)

Just to be clear, I'm not complaining about the logic, not saying its a bug or anything along that line. Just a simple request and you were fully in your rights to deny and I understand fully. Pretty much just means I will have to hunt it down and thats fully acceptable.

As for the products search, it is odd but people search by the name and it pulls up all the variances. I could potentially create attributes but that would cause a number of issues... nontheless I think this topic is almost like if I should continue support of ie6 or 7 lol.

Anywho, thanks for your time and I do enjoy the product very much.

What would be odd is to search by model and pull up all the product with the same product name and a different model number..

Re: Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)

Hi
Thank you so much for this mod . I really like it!
I have installed it and it works fine with products, ( and also with other pages such as "about" witch I changed in the database) but I can´t get it to work with categories. I have the field in the Catalog/category admin page, but when I write something in the field and save, nothing happens, the field is still empty. I´ve checked the files with WinMerge and I belive I updated and publiced all the relevant files.
(excuse my english)

That can only be a problem with the category file not having been merged properly.

If you like, get in contact with FTP and admin details for your site and I can take a quick look at this file for you.

By the way, Beyond Compare is MUCH better than Winmerge, well worth the money! :)

Re: Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)

I installed CEON URI Mapping on a website built on 1.3.8a. My URLs now have "class=" appended to them, like this:

http://www.mysite.com/about-us class=

Any idea what would cause this? Was it caused by CEON, or would something else be the more likely culprit? I first noticed the issue immediately after installing CEON, so that seems to be the cause.

thanks for any help you can provide. Let me know if you need the actual URL of the website and I can provide it at that time.

It's definitely not the module, it doesn't change the content of your href tags other than to change the URI generated. It sounds like you've accidentally broken some link code in a template file. Check to see if one of yotu template files has something like the following in it:

<?php echo zen_href_link(...) . ' class="

insetad of something like

<?php echo zen_href_link(...) . '" class="

This would cause "class =" to be added to the end of the URIs.

Good luck in getting this sorted!

All the best...

If/when a solution is found, I will post it here just in case anyone else comes across the same issue in the future.

Thanks again!

The issue was related to an attempt I made to highlight the link for the "current" EZ Page. I reverted the file in question (ezpages_bar_header.php) and the problem is now resolved.

Many thanks to gjh42 for pointing this issue out in another thread.

Yes, the software doesn't change the way the HTML works in the background, you can make any changes like this that you desire!
