HTACCESS, IEPNGFIX, and ADMIN Dilema

I have a pretty functional ZenCart, but have been struggling for some time to getting IEPNGFIX to work so that PNG images would display correctly in IE6.

Based on another post I saw, getting the IEPNGFIX working involved creating a .htaccess file in my domain root (the actual cart is one down in the /shop folder). The htaccess contents are:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mystore.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.
)$ http://www.mystore.com/$1 [R=permanent,L]*

However, when this is in place, I can no longer log into ADMIN. Removing the .htaccess file allows ADMIN login, but the PNG images in IE6 are then broken again.

I've checked all my config.php files to ensure the REWRITE matched, so I'm good there.

So, what's could be up with the HTACCESS file that prevents ADMIN login?

Second question: is there a definitive guide to .htaccess files when/how to use with ZenCart? I've searched the forums until I can't see any longer. There's a ton of differing info on .htaccess files, so much so that I'll be hear until retirement trying to get my store launched.

Any thoughts or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Re: HTACCESS, IEPNGFIX, and ADMIN Dilema

you don't add that to your .htaccess. the file is iepngfix.htc

here is the link to the authors and support website with instruction
http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/demo/

i beleive you should include this file in the folder that zencart is been installed /shop ...

and add the CSS to the stylesheet.css

Re: HTACCESS, IEPNGFIX, and ADMIN Dilema

Thanks, Tony_Sar.

Twinhelix is where I downloaded the IEPNGFIX.htc and the appropriate code that I added to my CSS file, but the code I posted above is intended for .htaccess files.

Anyway, when I installed the Twinhelix solution, IE6 would only display the png transparency not on the initial load of my site, but only after I would click on a link (at site load, IE6 was giving a page error that the .htc file was not accessible).

That's when I found another ZenCart user's post effectively stating the same problem. Her fix was to put that rewrite information in the .htaccess file in her domain root, just as I described above. That worked for me, too, with the nasty side effect of not being able to log into my admin page afterwards.

Between you and me, I think the ZenCart forum would have about 2/3 less posts, if it weren't for those crazy IE non-compatibilities... lol.

At what point do we stop worrying and developing to accommodate IE6? Things would be much simpler.

Thanks again.

Thanks, WebsiteRob!

Do you know if there are any advantages of JS over the CSS-based solution, such as load times, etc?

Re: HTACCESS, IEPNGFIX, and ADMIN Dilema

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

As of Dec 08 - IE6 has finally dropped below 20% YEA!!! and as developers the fewer things we do to make things perfect in IE6 the more folks that will finally upgrade or change browsers ...

For example - the upcoming Zen Cart 2.0 release will still function fine using IE6, but we are not making any IE6 specific hacks to the templates for compatibility - So there may be some minor display issues.

Has anyone gotten this to work? I've been searching for days now, trying to find a solution to the IE6 and IE7 page load error.

I've given up on the IEPNGFIX solution for now and have removed it, but am having the same issue with the csshover.htc used in the CSS Flyout Menu.

Again, I found another post with yet another .htaccess solution:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.
)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]*

By redirecting everything to 'www.mydomain.com,' this effectively fixes the .htc page load error issue, which seems to only occur when the domain is used without www.

So all would seem good, except that - again - the ZenCart admin login does not work as long as the .htaccess is in place. Removing this file allows me to log into admin, but of course, the IE page load error returns.

I'm at my wits end with this one, so if any of you Zenners have a definitive solution, I'm all ears and would be very grateful.

Thanks!

Big breakthrough on this... Apparently, my SSL certificate (although functioning and chaining perfectly) was interfering with my efforts. For those of you who may be experiencing the same frustration:

  • I totally blew away my SSL certificate configuration
  • Removed all vestiges of the IEPNGFIX setup
  • Ensured that each config.php file in my /includes and admin/includes folders still included the 'www' designation in references to my domain name (I had previously made these edits while trying to get this to work).
  • Put the .htaccess file back into service. Located in my domain's root folder, it contains:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.
)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]*

(Note that my store is located in a subfolder, for example https://www.mysite.com/store, so I put the .htaccess file at the domain root, https://www.mysite.com).

At this point I tested, and lo and behold the IE page load error was fixed AND I could log into the ZenCart Admin. At that point, I reinstalled IEPNGFIX, and that, too worked in conjunction with the admin login.

All that was left to do was to re-establish my SSL setup, which I did. The CSS Flyout Menus and IEPNGFIX continued to work with SSL, and I was still able to login to the admin page.

Whew! On to my next issue...
