Linking Product Attribute with adding choice to shopping cart

Hi
Have looked on the forum and elsewhere and haven't been able to find this.

I would like to be able to add battery requirements to each product as an attribute - if the battery box is checked then the batteries required (the type of battery and their price would be shown) are automatically added to the shopping cart.

E.G.

Product: Radio

Options:
Batteries required for product:

  • Add to cart: 2 x AA (£1.00)
  • No - I do not wish to purchase batteries

Hope this makes sense and I hope there is a solution.

In the meantime I will work on the colour options ! Plenty to do to sort attributes out - wish there was a better/quicker way.

Helen

Re: Linking Product Attribute with adding choice to shopping cart

Create a dropdown attribute OPTION NAME called (for example): Add Batteries to order

Then, assign OPTION VALUES

Not required (set this to DISPLAY ONLY, and make it the DEFAULT value offered. Give it a sort order of 0)
Yes, batteries required (give it a sort order of 10).

When you assign this attribute to a given product, you can individually apply prices, using the price controller in the attributes controller section.

You could also create ADDITIONAL/ALTERNATIVE OPTION VALUES, such as:

Pack of 2 AA
Pack of 4 AA
Pack of 2 AAA
Pack of 4 AAA

or even:

Duracell 4-pack AA
Duracell 2-pack AAA

...etc. It's up to you...

Then, when you create an association between a product and the OPTION NAME (Yes, batteries required), you could apply the relevant OPTION VALUE(S) to individual products.

So, for example, if a toy car requires AA batteries, your dropdown selection could read:

  • Not Required
  • Energizer 2-pack AA (+$3.00)
  • Energizer 4-pack AA (+$5.00)
  • Duracell 2-pack AA (+$4.50)
  • Duracell 4-pack AA (+$6.50)

... because when you apply the OPTION NAME to that toy car, you select only the OPTION VALUES (all AA batteries) that are applicable to that product.

Re: Linking Product Attribute with adding choice to shopping cart

swguy (Scott Wilson) has a module called "Better Together" that will allow pretty much the same thing. The advantages are that if batteries are a stock item, the better-together module will work with your store's stock management systems a little better.

You could also consider the Stock By Attributes module available in the Free Add-ons section, which does pretty much the same job, but allows you to still assign the batteries as attributes, but keeps track of stock.

Hi

Thanks for the quick responses.

I shall now look into both ideas.
