How to make certain items free? 1.3.8 user

I want to make certain items free after customers make a purchase of a certain amount of $$ spent in the shopping cart. Also, I would like the free item to revert back to its original price if the shopping cart decreases from the minimum amount. How can I do this?

Maybe the loyalty points module will work http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&products_id=1002

This wiki entry has two examples (bottom half of the page) that are not exactly what you are looking for, but could be easily adapted to do it.
