customise side bar

Hi there, i using 1.3.8 with my own theme. I have been asked by the person i am doing this for to redesign the categories menu, ideally i want to put an image (looking like a button) as the background for each category.

If there is anyway to do a CSS popout menu with images for a background that would be even better!

Have a look in the Free Software Add Ons section (link top-left). I'm sure you will be pleased.
