All orders say 'shipped' despite setting default to 'pending'

Every order I receive is listed in my admin as 'shipped', despite the fact that I have set the default to 'pending.' I've uninstalled 'super orders', thinking perhaps that was interfering. It's a huge problem because I must constantly check my entire roster of recent orders to make sure I haven't missed one and not mailed it out.
Any ideas where this error is being generated in the coding?

Addendum from likes2draw: This seems to be PayPal related. The one order I took recently with a payment by money order shows proper status: 'pending.' It's orders paid through PayPal that seem to default to 'shipped' once payment is received.

Problem solved. It was my setting in the paypal module.

Yes ... to clarify ... you must set the desired order-status within your payment module to determine what status will be applied to orders which are paid-for by using that module. The usual value is "Processing".
