How to make first items ordered free?

I am selling an item but would like to make the first 2 purchased free of charge and charge for any extra ordered. I have tried adding an attribute that would deduct the charges for the first 2 items, but it will not handle a negative number for one time charges. I am using version 1.3.8a. URL is https://www.NotepadsForFree.com. There must be an easy way to do this.

Good point, but, they need to pay for the shipping and handling and any extras they want. They might only order 2 pads.

I was thinking they have to order "some" quantity and you just send the additional ones along with them ...

Or, could this be done with Discount Coupons for a given amount to cover the cost of 2 pads?

I found the contribution called Quantity Discounts. That took care of it nicely. The coupon idea also worked, but this works better for me.
