An easier way to add downloadable products?

Is there an easier way of adding new downloadable products rather than adding the product, then uploading the zip to the /downloads folder and then finally going to attributes settings and going through that?

Surely there is a way you can just add the product and create the zip all at the same time or at least on the same page and the zip is automatically added to the downloads folder?

The only way to do this all in one step from the product entry page is to develop a new product type for your downloadable products. I recall doing that for a client a few years ago, but I don't know if I still have the files and if I did it would take time to update them, as they were for v1.2.4
