better on linux or windows server?

hello, I've some sites with zencart hosted on linux server, I would to know if it is better hosted on linux server or if it is egual on windows server.

If it is equal, can I move my files from linux server to window server without problems?

Also the speed of site is the same?

Thank you very much

Re: better on linux or windows server?

This are just my opinion regarding Window and Linux.

PHP, MYSQL, APACHE are native to unix thus they play nice on linux .
PHP was recently ported to IIS as such i feel is still buggy

In general window is slower then linux but all depends on what hardware is being used to host your site on .

as far as i know , there are no known viruses for linux OS. but as you know there are plenty for window .

Linux hosting packages seems to be much cheaper then Window .

linux opensource nature , allows for faster patch and fixes if vunribility being discovered by sooo many people working on linux projects and more.

this are just my 2 cents , others may know more about this.

Linux hosting is cheaper but more stable than Windows.

No-brainer - avoid windoze whenever using MySQL and PHP.

Re: better on linux or windows server?

I have decided to host zen cart on Linux. I have the hosting company installed a copy for me. My development environment is in windows.

Now, I have ftp a copy of the zen cart from my website in hosting company to my local windows pc. These file format is Linux/Unix. When I open a file in ultraedit in windows, it asks me if I want to convert to DOS format.

My question is will be impact my development? should I convert to Linux/Unix file format (mainly it is different ways to handle newline) before I upload files to my hosting?

Thanks.

My rule of thumb is to avoid any type of file conversion if possible. It always comes at a cost.

Anyway, as you seem to be already aware of the most significant differences between formats, it would be beneficial for you to know that PHP/HTML is very fussy about the difference - or, more specifically, any additional whitespace (incl CR/LF) after a closing php tag is treated by the html as output data, and this often results in very difficult to locate "headers already sent" error messages.

So, to answer your question, yes, you will need to convert back to *nix format to avoid this problem. However it is better still to let your editor work "*nix" mode and avoid the problem entirely.

Cheers
Rod
