Missing cart and checkout buttons after upgrade

I've upgraded from 1.3.7 to 1.3.8a

Both the shopping cart and checkout buttons at the top right are now missing. If I try to open the images in a new tab I see:

The requested URL /includes/templates/template_default/buttons/english/BUTTON_IMAGE_VIEW_SMALL_WHITE was not found on this server.

Also my selected template isn't template_default.

I checked the contents of both my template and template_default of my live install and my backup and the contents look the same.

What is the name of your custom template name??
This is the path where you will find the button
If you changed your buttons at one time there should be a folder here:

includes/ templates/ your_template_name/ buttons/ english/ BUTTON_IMAGE_VIEW_SMALL_WHITE

Use the developers tools kit:
admin panel/ tool/ developers tool kit

1. bottom left: search for: BUTTON_IMAGE_VIEW_SMALL_WHITE
2. middle: catalog
3. end: search
4. See if you have missed an override file here or have messed with a core

The custom template is called pwrtek

I've not changed anything to the files/folders in the template and looking in the buttons folder I can see all the image files as previous.

I did the search and found the following line that I had already found in my local backup copy that I took before the upgrade. I don't have enough knowledge to reconcile how to get from that reference to the actual image file sat in the buttons folder.

When you upgrade with custom folders

1. Use Winmerge to compare the old file to the new file
2. Every new version of zen certain folders .php files are rewritten
3. So if you just upload all the custom folders to the newly installed cart, this will mess with it.
4. EX: compare the english.php file with your custom english.php file
5. Make changes to the new version, and then ftp that folder to the new custom folder
6. Now you have a complete new site running
7. This will take time, be patient
8. It also has to be checked out with each mod you have downloaded

re. Winmerge. I'm on a Mac so can't use it.

This is a site I've inherited and I'm unable to compare the pre-upgraded site with what was originally uploaded.

I found a similar Mac app to compare folders and files.

I've also downloaded v1.3.7 which I compared with my backup of the installation. It told me that based on modified dates pretty much everything had changed.

I'm not going to be able to go down that route.

To look at another way, since (fingers crossed) my problem is limited to this problem. Where would you expect the images to be defined if I was doing a modification?
