Is there any way to apply a tax to each item without having to go into every product??

I am having problems setting up a tax on existing stock. In the process of re-setting my account, I deleted the zone in which all of our stock set its tax to. I remade the zone, and realized only later that this was why the zone was failing to be taxed.
Does anyone have a way to apply a tax to each item in all categories? This would be only one zone (for instate tax) yet applies to all items. Help?? Thanks a lot in advance

Mk,
Good question...
I use Navicat

Navicat is a success, thank you so much!
Following the steps, I was able to change the tax on all 800 items within 5 minutes. Pretty great.
Thanks,
Matt

Mk,
You are most welcome, glad that Navicat and I could assist you with your problem...

Guess you don't want to know the command, after backing up your database, to change all products_tax_class_id from 0 to 1 can be done in the Tools ... Install SQL Patches ... with the command:
UPDATE products SET products_tax_class_id = XX;
where XX is the value you want to use for the tax class id ... :cool:

Ajeh,
Way too sweet, Thanks for the information and knowledge on how to accomplish this task in less time...

It is a handy one ... :smile:
phpMyAdmin or Navicat are very handy for other types of changes ... so not a bad alternative ... :cool:

MUCHAS GRACIAS!
I had to change my tax class on over 3000 products from none to Taxable! It took me longer to back up the database than to input the SQL patch!
Super Awesome, as I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a quick way to do this!
BTW, I searched "changing tax class on all products" and couldn't find anything useful, by a fluke, I found this thread and read through it, otherwise, I wouldn't have found this little tip!

Glad that this was able to help you, thanks for the update! :smile:

Hello,
I am trying to do the same (1.3.7 and 1.3.8)- To set tax to all products. Now I have to none.
First I did following:
"Catalog -> Product Types -> (choose a product type) -> Edit Layout -> Product Price Tax Default changed to** 1**
Than, I am using "SQL Query Executor" and type in window, where it says "Enter the query to be executed:" following combination (one at a time):
UPDATE products SET products_tax_class_id = 01;
or
UPDATE products SET products_tax_class_id = 1;
or
UPDATE products SET products_tax_class_id =01;
or
UPDATE products SET products_tax_class_id =1;
Than I am going to product editor and in the field "Tax Class" there is still** -none-**
Howevere if I manually select arror near it I can set State sale tax.
Do I do anythig wrong? What XX has to replaced with?
How would I know if remedy works?
Thanks, for respond in advance.

You need to get the id value for your tax ... edit a Product Manually and set it to taxed ... then look in the products_table to see what the value is that is set for the:
products_tax_class_id

Thanks for reply.
So far, I did not have a need to access products_table.
Do I look in products_table from C-panel or Zen Cart Admin?

Please, disregard previous questions.
I did figure out how to do it.
For others, like myself, who are from "mechanical" world here it is how to do it:
Go to product edit area in ZEN CART Admin and change manually first product to be taxed.
Go to your C-panel and click on **phpMyAdmin ** icon.
This will take you to the next page.
In the upper left conner there are links to the data base. In my case it was called _ZC1 (Zen Cart 1?). Click on this link, you will get another page.
On the very left side is a long column with names/links of sub tables. Find the one called **zen_products **. Click on this link.
It will open on the same page this table. Scroll to the right to find column with title products_tax_class_id
You will see that 1-st product (which was edited in 1) has different** products_tax_class_id**
(in my case 2) than all others (1).
Next, go back to Zen Cart Admin, Tools, ... Install SQL Patches
and type in window, where it says "Enter the query to be executed:" following Code:
UPDATE products SET products_tax_class_id = 2;
Click Send
This should make it.
If this did not work, please let me know.

Thanks for the update and posting that in your case, the tax id value was 2 rather than the common value of 1 ...
Also, thanks for the detailed steps on how you were able to determine the products_tax_class_id from the products table via phpMyAdmin through your Control Panel of cPanel ... :smile:
