Coupon lowers order total below Free shipping amount requirement

I have free shipping enabled for orders over $50. Customers have placed $50 or more worth of products in the cart and then enter a coupon they received which brings the total down below $50 and they still get free shipping. I would really like the free shipping to apply to final order totals of $50 or more. I understand that shipping is the first option selected and then in step 2 the coupon is entered, so I'm assuming there is no way to handle this situation, but wanted to ask this forum. I'm considering making a coupon that will apply free shipping if the order is over $50, which would then no allow second coupon to be applied. If this is possible, then this would "get around" my problem, but I'd really like an automated way. This is an old chestnut and I recall reading posts on it way back in 2005/2006.

I'm not sure if a solution was ever provided, but do some searches and maybe you'll get lucky.

It's a tough topic to search (combination of coupon and free shipping) on as there these are two overlapping functions within Zen cart. So I'm finding posts about one or the other, but not both, which is why I'm attempting a fresh request. Thanks.
