Product layout for sales results?

I am wondering if members here have any thoughts on the best way to layout products.

My site for example sells kids tee's. If I have one print that comes in 4 different color shirts. Is it best to list each color as a separate product or create the attribute with color choices.

Would seeing the color help a sale? Or does it not make that big of a difference?

My site is https://www.pipparoo.com if you want to see an example. Look at Tee's or Onesies.

I would love to hear the thoughts on this.

Cheers
Greg

Re: Product layout for sales results?

Additional images with the alternate colors would be a good way to get all of them seen without making separate products.

You may want to use attribute images so each color will be associated with its selection box.

What he said. ;) I use attribute images except for markdown products that I just want to get rid of. I set them up as individual products because once they are sold out, the products no longer appear.

Re: Product layout for sales results?

I have found that if you are adding something as an attribute instead of a new individual product then it's best to include the attribute variations in the product title if you can. For instance:

Crew Neck T-Shirt, Red, Green, Blue, Black

That way when someone is searching for a red crew neck t they can find your item.

We've had great success this way. We go for the "long tail" searches, meaning search terms with 3, 4, 5, 6 words which gives very specific and highly accurate search results. The long tail adds up to about 80% of all search terms. T shirt would be a highly contested keyword string and would be very hard to get into the top results, but red crew neck t shirt is going to be easier plus you are targeting much more qualified users(folks that are looking for what you are offering) and giving them the exact product they are searching for. This adds up to higher conversions.
