better display of subcategories in main window

ok, so i am finding limited info on this...

what i want is to show only top categories in categories sidebox. then, have flyout of subcategories, A and B. if someone mouses over categories, the subcategories will flyout, showing them A and B. At this point, one of three things could happen....

  1. they see the flyout, but still "click" the top category name
  2. they see the flyout and mouseover to category A and click
  3. they see the flyout and mouseover to category B and click

options 2 and 3 are pretty standard, and it works fine.

however, if option 1 happens, i want them to be brought to a subcategory display in the main window, that looks like this:
http://customk9design.com/catalog/page3.html

whereby they get a more detailed discription of choice A or B, and can then click on either to be caught back up with option 2 or 3 from above.

what im getting now is this:
http://customk9design.com/catalogzen/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1

:(
though i have a description added for this subcategory in the admin, it doesnt show... the image is small... (size does matter ) etc...

any help on how to make it look more like the 1st link??

thanks to all, as usual.

Re: better display of subcategories in main window

ok, that was a very obvious answer..

two other questions:

  1. i want them to show side by side, i have seen some mods that do this for product info, show in grid instead of stacked,
will something like that work for this?

  2. where does the description of the subcategory display? i have the image larger, but still no detailed info.

thanks!!

Re: better display of subcategories in main window

the grid layout should be done using your CSS .. currently i only see one sub , so i can not tell what codes are missing .

subcat information will display once you clicked on that subcat and if you have more then 1 item under that sub category .. currently you have one item and zc will take you directly to product info page. so add additional item and test.

you also need to fix your top navigation as it is stacked . ( CSS modification needed )

Re: better display of subcategories in main window

ooooooooook..... noow we're getting somewhere..

so, i added some more test items, just to get a better idea of the layout.

i can prob. figure some of this out myself, but if you have some quick answers, it would be much appreciated!

  1. i am very happy with the subcategory layout, however i want to turn off the subcategory title display below the image...

  2. i assume if i want to see the subcategory description ON the subcategory page, as was shown in the 1st post, 1st link... i would need to create a larger subcategory image, where it was all displayed, as an image rather than a text box?

  3. with that being said, is there then a way, after you get to the product listing screen, to then display only the category discription, and not the image? or... i think it is doing that already??

so basically, main categories go to sub categories with image and description in the image... then go to product listing with description only... then turn off "display subcategory image" on individual product listings??

lastly, i have addtl images uploaded for the new test products, but they are not showing... any hints?

(PS, i know the ezpages script is acting up, i have a post out in the css section if you wanted to take a stab at that too lol)

THANKS!

Re: better display of subcategories in main window

Note - if you want the subcat description to show even when there is only one product in it, set admin > Configuration > Layout Settings > Skip 1-prod categories to false.

Re: better display of subcategories in main window

OK Category Kings I am almost in the same boat so could do with your help.

I want main categories to show on my main page. They do show but something is not configured right and they do not display correctly.

3 across first row ; 1 only in second row ; 3 across 3rd row
1 only in 4th row

It seems to me that I might have it set up to try and show 4 per row but do you think I can find where that is to try and correct it !!! NOT.

AND when I shrink the picture size to almost nothing so it can fit 4 across a row the display does not change, still 3 then 1, 3 then 1 even though it could easily fit 4 across

https://www.sportsclubdirect.com.au for a view if anybody can help

THanks

Re: better display of subcategories in main window

This is a problem that can happen sometimes in one browser and not another, due to tiny mathematical differences in handling. The code automatically gives each item a % of column width according to how many are set per column (Configuration > Index > Categories per Row), and if you add any padding or margins, by CSS rules those increase the amount of space the items take. So 4 items means 25% per item, plus a few pixels, and there is not room for all four on one line. The width is rounded down, so 3 per line gives a tiny bit of cushion, but sometimes 4 per line won't fit because there is a .000000001 overage by the browser's calculations.

Re: better display of subcategories in main window

Thnaks for explaining why this happens.

I want to change it to 3 products per row for the category view but there is no option for this in config/index. It allows for a setting for new/special/upcoming/featured products (which are all set for 3 per row in any case) but nothing is there to set the number per row for the main category view itself.

Any idea where this is ?
