Having some problems installing ZC on 123reg

Hi guys, im brand new to this and already struggling to get off the mark - I've upload the files to our website..I've followed the install instructions, setting permissions, renaming configure files etc, and ive checked it a few times to make sure...

However, i'm now trying to run the install, and when I go to the url, It's displaying some of a .php file, raw code is being displayed. Is it a problem with my servers php or something?

Im using 123-reg, do their servers even work with zencart?!

Please put me out of my misery someone....thanks!

PS the url of my install is http://www.marlownailstudio.com/zencart/zc_install

Re: Having some problems installing ZC on 123reg

check to see your host support php , mysql , you might be on window server .. your php file is not being processed by server .

if you have access to CPANEL , make sure PHP has been activated for your account.

Re: Having some problems installing ZC on 123reg

There are at least two 123reg hosts. You're using the one in the UK. They started life as a registration company and offer simple hosting suitable for small static sites only. Last time I looked their hosting didn't include PHP or MySQL.

This looks to me like a strategy of avoiding that part of the hosting market that requires the heaviest investment in support and service (no laughing in the back row please, there are web hosts who do provide these, you just need to choose carefully). So you can upgrade to a hosted e-commerce cart, or to a dedicated server through a sister company (where most likely you'd find yourself responsible for managing it yourself).

I suspect that they are also trying to maintain differentiation with services offered by other parts of their ultimate parent, e.g. via Tiscali for consumers and Pipex increasingly focused on businesses.

So, digression over, sorry, unless something has changed, the problem is that you hosting account can't run dynamic applications like Zen Cart.

Re: Having some problems installing ZC on 123reg

ok sorted, 123 reg dont support php. Simple answer really! Cheers.

I've now subscribed to NXserve for a free php and mysql account, and applied it to my existing domain (marlownailstudio.com) ...so will this then enable me to host the zencart package on my NXserve space and leave the rest of the website on the 123 reg servers?

Im slightly confused as to how it might work..any light shedding much appreciated

Cheers for the reply, your correct, thankyou...although you are the bearer of bad news.

Do I need to upgrade my whole hosting to a company that provides these services, or can I make use of these services on other "free sql" type sites? This would be so much easier, and cheaper! Seeing as it's just an experiment, with a view to setting up our online shop eventually, don't really want to be forking out MORE money on hosting :(

Re: Having some problems installing ZC on 123reg

"Easier and cheaper" don't usually go together, especially where web hosting is concerned, doubly so for sophisticated, dynamic applications like Zen Cart.

A free service, even one offering a database, is extremely unlikely to be configured effectively for Zen Cart. They typically set up for taking small numbers of simple page loads, with minimal server processing, from a very large number of sites. Dynamic applications like Zen Cart require short bursts of intensive server and database activity which free and even low cost hosts quite appropriately don't set their servers up to handle.

I note your comment about wanting to keep costs down until you are ready to set up your store, and understand that. But this forum has many posts from people who opted for budget services and found that the cost and frustration far outweighed the modest financial savings.

You could host your current home page and your zencart on different servers, but they would then need different URLs. Better would be to move your existing site to your new hosting account and point your domain name to the new account. 123reg is good at doing that.
