categories won't show up on main page

Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere, butI can't figure out how to get my category boxes to show up on the main page.

I've been looking everywhere, but the only answer I've found has been Admin>Config>Layout Settings and set "Categories - Always show on main page" to 1 .... but I've already done that. Over and over again. And it's still not there.

Any ideas?

Have you enable this already?

admin panel/ tools/ layout boxes controller

  1. are they enabled
  2. Have you intentially turned of both columns on the main page

i have sideboxes/categories.php set to ON

im not sure if i have both columns on or off... im basing mine on another site and i just set my settings to match those.

i just turned on layout settings>main page - opens with category... so my categories came up but so did the stupid "new products for april" thing that i finally just got rid of. so how do i get rid of that again? and how do i set pictures for the categories?
