Downloads are not available until payment has been confirmed

A customer is not able to download his purchase.
The client is currently running 1.38a with a subscription modification.

My suspicion is that the IPN from Paypal failed or got...messed up somehow. The weird thing is everthing is fine in the admin order page. The download shows, the transaction is complete. Is there some point in displaying the download link that this would be checked? Is there a way to force it?

Oh, and the payment went through and is in paypal right now.

Any help is much apprecaited.
