changing what is seen by the customer

My store is selling essays to students in a master, or PHd program. I have essays on the site. Is there a way where they can only view 100 characters of the essay? If they can see it all, then they will not need to purchase it.

Is it OK to only have a image on the first item for a category, because there will be so many I do not want to have an image for every essay. Also I am currently using the same image for the first item in the category.

Pkease let me know if all this is possible.

If you are creating an image of the essay, just show what you want in the image. Or, make a nice-looking "Lorum Ipsum" image and put a few of the words in the description.
To your second part, create a category for Masters a product for English Lit, and have all available essays as options to that product. One image: many possibilities.

I will not be the only one uploading essays on this site, the customer will have the ability to upload essays as well, that is why I would like to know where a limit in characters can be set.

If this product is downloadable, is the product type set correctly? The file should be in one folder and separate from the image.

just gotta get ya the right info. Had a friend who created a great product that he called Puzzables. Good product, but it went under because nobody knew to search for Puzzables and he wouldn't advertise it any other way. Now that we know more about what the question is, let's get you some info.

Head into Tutorials/FAQ, select the Setting Up Products and Attributes category, and search for download.

get a little more "book larnin'" over there and then come back with some questions if there's still something you need to know.

Will this help me with the upload information as well?

Sure will.
You could also set up a test in another directory and make sure it installs the demo. THen you can see how a download product is presented.
