installer keeps crashing - hangs on system-setup screen

using 1.3.8
this is a new install
everything checks out fine until I get to the system set-up page.
I don't get any errors it just won't continue to the next step. It spins and spins and eventually my browser times out after more than 20 min.

I don't have an SSL certificate set up yet so I have those radio buttons on "no". Everything seems to be correct. Does anyone know what I should do to troubleshoot this? I have installed a few other carts on the same server without any problems what-so-ever.

Is the server configuration compatible with ZC? Ask your host for advice.

the installer checks prerequisites before starting to install and everything checks out fine.

Are there some requirements that the installer does not check for that could be causing the installer to crash?

I checked with my host.
There is no reason why zen cart should not work.
It seems to get hung up around the SSL system set up issue.
I don't have an SSL yet so I have the radio buttons clicked no. But maybe the https pathways are what is making the installer crash cause it can't find them? I have tried leaving them blank, tried many different pathways and it still crashes.
Any suggestions?

yes I have deleted everything and re-uploaded three times.
and everytime it crashes on the same page of the installer.

If the first few pages of the installer work perfectly - why would it crash on the system setup page? It says that you don't have to have your SSL certificate set up yet -- but could that be the problem?

Kim is suggesting that you get a fresh copy of the software from the zencart download facility at sourceforge.net

When you originally collected the zip file from sourceforge, you may have got a slightly corrupted file.

Get a fresh copy of the software, unzip it and then FTP that copy to your server. Make sure you set transfer mode to AUTO on your FTP program so that ASCII and Binary files are ported correctly.

If you have a control panel (like CPanel) in your hosting account, another good way to avoid corrupted files is to upload the Zencart zip file to your server and unzip it there with the 'extract' function in the control panel File Manager.

The next step after system_setup in v1.3.x is to check whether there is a phpBB install available somewhere, and if there is, it attempts to verify its config.php settings and access its database.
So, if the "hang" you're referring to is happening after clicking to "save" your system settings, AND you have phpbb installed, try temporarily renaming your phpBB folder (to something unusual like "abcdefg") and/or its config.php file while doing your Zen Cart install. That should cause it to ignore the phpBB inspection. Naturally, undo the renaming after you've finished the zc install.

Other than that, there's nothing significant on the system_setup page to cause any freezing, in which case, as the others have said, maybe you have a bad set of files on your server?
