Offering payment methods to only some customers

Right now everything on my site goes through paypal.

i would like to offer other payment methods (such as cheque) but only to people I have preapproved... can this be done?

Not "out of the box", but it's not real difficult to setup if you're comfortable coding.

Not really that comfortable.... where would I go to get this done for me? (and how much time do you think it would take.

It's not difficult to do - add a new authorization field to the customers table, give admin a means of setting the value for that via the edit customer page and modify the payment module to check for the authorization. A coder familiar with the cart code should be able to do that for you in less than 2 hours. You can always put a post in the Commercial Help Wanted forum if you're looking for someone to do it for you.
