How do I add an information field for customers to fill when registering?

My company is set up as a multi level marketing model and I need a way to link each new registrant to the distributor by which the new customer was referred so that the distributor can receive his/her commission. Is there a way to add a "Referring Distributor's ID" field for the new customer to fill while registering?
