problem with gmail smtpauth 465

I have a problem with setting up gmail account, I have set everything right. But when I send newsletters from zen-cart it does not go and gives the error:

SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP server.

Here are the settings.

E-Mail Transport Method : smtpauth
E-Mail Linefeeds : LF
Use MIME HTML When Sending Emails : true
Verify E-Mail Addresses Through DNS : false
Send E-Mails : true
SMTP Server Host Address tls://smtp.gmail.com or smtp.gmail.com : smtp.gmail.com
SMTP Server Port Number : 465
SMTP Authentication Required : true
SMTP Authentication Username [email protected] or [email protected] : [email protected]
SMTP Authentication Password your password : my password

here is the connection from the server, which works perfect.

root@server [~]# telnet smtp.gmail.com 465
Trying 74.125.79.109...
Connected to smtp.gmail.com (74.125.79.109).
Escape character is '^]'.

If anyone has any solution for this please let me know.

Re: problem with gmail smtpauth 465

What version of Zen Cart are you using?
If you're using v1.3.8, and not v1.3.8a, then you'll have to fix this bug manually: http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpost.php?p=473242&postcount=2 ... or just upgrade.

Re: problem with gmail smtpauth 465

The version is 1.3.8a.

Does anyone know if there is any specific php module or anything which is required on the server side ?

Technically speaking, your server needs to support TLS. Most do not.

Re: problem with gmail smtpauth 465

Guys, The problem is fixed now.

What was done?

I recompiled apache 2.0 and PHP with openssl and then checked it and this has fixed the issue.

Now can send emails fine from zen cart using gmail smtpauth.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Much appreciated.

I bet my hosted environment isn't supporting TLS..
