Linking a product to another category changes the master category for that product

My thought is that when you first create an item, that is the correct master category unless you MOVE that item to a different category or change the master category.... when linking a product to another category the master category should not change but should still be the original category.

On a clean brand new install without addons, the master category does not change when you link a Product to another Category ...

I believe you have something moofy going on there ... :blink:

Maybe it is time for me to seriously think about upgrading to 1.3.8a..... :lookaroun

Let's try this again.

You are right that the master category does not change. However, I was assuming the master category was the catagory that would show up if you pulled an individual item up (maybe it is supposed to be that way) however, if you link an individual item to another catagory the last category linked to will be what shows up in the "cookie trail" category mapping for the item instead of the master category.... I hope you understand what I am saying...

Okay, so you have an item that is blue and white striped, your item has blue as it's master category. You link it to the white category. Your customer comes along and finds the item in the white category and that is what shows in the breadcrumb, correct? Why do you think it should be the blue?

Thank you for checking on this. I do not like your example so let me create a new one :smile:.

Say I sell plants.... I enter a new plant in the dwarf tree category called bonzai. So now I know I have other categories that the bonzai will fall in .... short leaf tree and conifer tree. Well since I am the "expert" of my store I know that the bonzai should show up under the master category breadcrumb of dwarf tree. Now when I copy the bonzai to the short leaf tree category the breadcrumb will now show this as the category... but I want people who are looking at it to be able to quickly see (and scroll previous and next and product listing through) my other dwarf trees instead of the short leaf trees.... then again when I copy the bonzai to the conifer category it will do the same thing....

Actually, I wish the cart knew which category the person was looking at before they went to the item and showed that category information in the previous, next, product listing and bread crumb and leave the master category information when when the item is gone directly to it.... now that makes a lot of sense :smile:

My problem is somewhat similar to the initial thread. In my case though, the master category does not appear to be changing in the crumb; however the category picture is changing. I will explain how it works using my fabric.

I have a number of fabrics under a category (eg Stafford County). Each fabric can then be linked to sub category like 'blue' or 'stripe' or even both. What is happening is that after I link when you click on the fabric in the cart to go the individual product listing it is showing the sub category picture above and not the master category picture. This seems to have just begun to happen. In my earlier lines of fabric like 'Coventry' all is fine.

I was wondering if I have caused this problem by deleting a product that was linked to a sub category. Should you remove links before deleting products?

To see what is happening now in my cart, go to this page.

Click on the first fabric and you wil see that the category picture above has changed to 'blues' when it should be staying 'Stafford County'

Can someone inform me on how the breadcrumb master category is determined? I have an item who's master category is in category "G" but shows up in the breadcrumb trail in category "B" (which it is also linked to).
