Products on main page not showing

In Admin->Configuration->Index Listing

I have Show New Products on Main Page turned on (set to 1) and no products are showing, I have 5 new products. This in the English section of the German/English bilingual version 1.3.8.

Any ideas how to get those products showing on my main page?

My admin settings are not having any effect. Another problem currently besides the one above;
1 In Admin/Configuration/Layout Settings/ I have "Customer Greeting - Show on Index Page" turned OFF and it is still showing.

Ah ha. It gets a bit thicker... I "discovered" that in
Admin/Configuration/Layout Settings I can toggle OFF the
Categories - Always Show on Main Page

So that gets rid of the categories being listed on the front page. But it ALSO gets rid of the product listings which I finally figured out how to get showing. Now the question is: how to list simply the new products on the main page without the (redundant) listing of categories above it, and without changing core code?

-- Customer Greeting is still showing contrary to it's setting in Admin/Configuration/Layout Settings/ "Customer Greeting - Show on Index Page" which is OFF.
