Subcategory not showing up - I searched really!

I searched the forum (really!) and I am pullilng out my hair. I checked the database via myphpadmin and the settings are there. I've selected Admin - layout settings - Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories set to 1 so that they are open. I'm using the default theme and have made no changes to this theme and the subcategories don't show up. Any ideas other settings, I am of course new to zen cart, but I really have looked everywhere! Thanks for any help you might offer.

Do you have products set up in the subcategories?

There is a setting in admin for categories with only one product to open the product listing and skip the category.

I kept searching and I figured it out. So I want the subcategories ALWAYS on, not just when I click on a top category.

I installed the ch_category add-on which is included in the category dressing add-on and it works.

Now I have the choice of a ch_category box in the layout box controller and my categories and subcategories always show. Thanks for the speedy reply! I really appreciate it. :)
