Problem getting banners to appear where I want them

I am using Zencart 1.3.8 and trying to achieve sth which I think should be straightforward but I am struggling. I want 2 banners to appear in the left hand column in 2 distinct sideboxes. I do not want them to refresh/ rotate/ change position - just to be fixed where they are and both to be visible at all times.

In Tools > layout boxes I have switched on sideboxes/banner_box.php and banner_box2.php. They are set to display l/column, which they do.

In banner manager I tried to set up 2 new groups SideBox-Banners-top and Sidebox-Banners-bottom and assign an ad to each one.

In admin>config>layout I assigned SideBox-Banners-top to banner_box2 position and SideBox-Banners-bottom to banner_box position.

The problem seems to be when assigning the banners in banner manager to a group, I type in when prompted the new group, click update but the banner is just assigned to SideBox-banner.

Am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help at all please?

Thanks for the advice. I have downloaded and installed this and it does work fine so thank you very much for that link. The only thing is that the site is for somebody else, and should they ever want to change the ads, they will need to come back to me as content is managed via the php files rather than the banner manager in the admin tool. They really want control of the site themselves and I had told them there was an ad manager to help with this.

Also from a personal point of view I am keen to understand what it is I was doing wrong to get the banner manager to work correctly. Are you able to advise further?
