Turn Off Better Categories for Sub-Category

After six months of trying, the second graphic designer I'm using has finally come up with something I'm happy with, but unfortunately I'm having a fair bit of trouble implementing it all.

I have the Better Categories mod installed but need it to look like the attached image where the sub-categories are not highlighted (or are highlighted white so it cannot be seen).

Any help really appreciated as i'd love more than anything to finally get this thing finished.
