htacess advice "please"

Hello,

  1. I have a sql folder, that I am thinking I need to protect with htacess, will this effect any functionality with the database etc?

  2. For all main folders that have an htacess file in them, does this fully protect every subfolder and file within the main folder?

  3. As there are subfolders that have htacess files in them also, is this ok, or do these conflict and stop working correctly, or is it that they have one in so they work independantly and will not conflict?

thanks
Paul

What does this 'sql folder' hold? Database files? SQL script files?
Do they really need to be located in a Web accessible folder?

Anyway, to answer your main question, no, a htaccess file will not affect the functionality of your database.

Yes.

It is ok to have htaccess files in the subfolders, and they are read independently. However, be aware of the rules of precedence. Depending on the contents of your htaccess files sometime the parent htaccess file will have precedence, and othertime it will be the child htaccess that takes precedence, at least if you are using Apache.

See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/sections.html for a little more info.

Cheers
Rod

Re: htacess advice "please"

This in your subfolder will prevent all script execution and browsing... But you should also place a blank index.html as well.

 OPTIONS -Indexes -ExecCGI
