stuck on install on PC

Hi all I am totally newer than newbie
I have my book and on page 33 I have gotten thru step 3 however at that point the screen does not look right and there is nothing obvious.

I cant find the xampp for windows and version 1.4.16 all the versions are too high and they are addons - I am at

http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/files/

I have tried to back up and see if I took a wrong click.

Re: stuck on install on PC

Scroll down the screen and click the the little '+' image to the left of the version you want.

After that, click the relevant download you want for your setup.

Re: stuck on install on PC

ok we are off to a 'good' start
I have MIE I think 6.0
On that page there is two files that are add ons with no other files showing-
so I viewed source and the coding is there but they do not show up on the standard page.
I scrolled down and copy paste the url for the file in the html coding I wanted and am hoping that this is going to do it.

any ideas what is going on with that page?

Re: stuck on install on PC

ok so did you get the 1.4.16 version? the EXE version and not the ZIP one? I made that mistake:frusty:

if you have done everything right - make sure ports are configured, etc then all you have to do is click it and everything should be fine.

note - after the install - the filezilla you see there is server - you have to go online to get the client so you can upload fast ftp

then once done - download mozzila thunderbird - another nice program

download 1.3.8a full file set - you'll be very happy when you get to page 53:clap:

as for the getting to the links for 1.4.16 I think they currently have a bug - I could get there either if you need the file I might have it

ah here you go:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/files/XAMPP%20Windows/xampp-win32-1.4.16-installer.exe/download

Re: stuck on install on PC

yes the links are still not working - i am on DU so last I looked this is a 3 hr DL.
What is the Thunderbird useful for?
I have Microsoft FW at this time altho some had said this is no good and get FREEZoneALARM- which it to is a 2-3 hour DL

SO on the MS FW there is a thing for TCP and it is a default - i left that checked as opposed to UDP(whatever that means)
So while waiting on the DL I went ahead and added the ports to the FW.

Does everyone out there have the Zone alarm as opposed to MS?
TIA

Re: stuck on install on PC

Even if you are on dial-up it's worth the time it takes to download and install XAMPP. The latest is: xampp-win32-1.7.1-installer.exe - and this is the one you want.

Forget the comment about Thunderbird (it's a rather crappy and amateurish mail programme). You're much better off with Outlook Express or Outlook - one of which you probably already have installed.

Forget about activating FileZilla as part of the XAMPP install, it's not necessary if you already have an FTP programme.

Forget about enabling Mercury Mail as part of the XAMPP install. It's not needed and requires a lot of extra manual installation and setup.

Juts download XAMPP, as above, and run the install.

Re: stuck on install on PC

I was just replying to the book comment as I also used the book -there was also an issue the the source forge link last night the other versions wouldn't appear so I posted direct link for the dude.

Brings up another question though - is the new one better to run 1.3.8a off of or are we (who are using the book) still good with 1.4.16?

Also - I have gotten to the part where i am setting ua a local domain and at the bottom of 36 it says to type in http://www.example.com and an example page is to pop up - mine is 'page not found'.

TIA alot!!

Were you able to get to the link for the 1.4.16?

Because the only way I found it was to source and some may find that hard.

Re: stuck on install on PC

I've not heard of problems with the sounds continually chiming before. U might want to check whether it's some other program doing that or your firewall/anti-virus that is alerting you to something.

If you have problems using "www.example.com":

  • check your settings starting from pg 37 onwards.
  • make sure you have started your Apache and MySQL in your XAMPP control panel. Do NOT start the FileZilla svc.
  • restarting your Windows may sometimes help as well.

Re: stuck on install on PC

ok I am sorry to be such a pain but
I have DL Crimson Editor-
I was hoping that going to www.example would help me find the file on page 37 - but if I have to adjust the file before I can get to example then I am still stuck -
I have gone into windows then to system 32folder then to the drivers after that there is no trace. the next files should be etc and then to hosts but it is not there. Am I on the right track or is ther an easier way?:frusty:

I can't image anyone doing this WO the manual.

Re: stuck on install on PC

You are over-thinking this. There is absolutely no need to try and configure your PC so that when you go to http://www.example.com you see your offline Zen Cart website on your local web server.

All you need do is to go to http://localhost/folder_name (folder_name being the name of the folder you installed Zen Cart in inside the htdocs folder).

I read ahead about the adjustment of the file and it was a little confusing. so I was hoping that the example would help me out.

Am I making this hard?

Re: stuck on install on PC

Why are you trying to set up a domain name? This is all you need to do:

  1. Install XAMPP on your PC.

  2. Download and unzip the latest version of Zen Cart.

  3. Create a new folder inside the XAMPP 'htdocs' folder.

  4. Copy/Paste the Zen Cart folders and files into the new folder inside the htdocs folder.

  5. Go to XAMPP at http://localhost and set up a User Name and Password for MySQL.

  6. Go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin and create a blank database.

  7. Then go to http://localhost/folder_name/zc_install and begin the Zen Cart installation. You'll need the name of the database, the db server address (localhost), and the MySQL User Name and Password you set up.

  8. After the install is completed you delete the zc_install folder and set the includes/configure.php file to Read Only by right-clicking on it and selecting Properties and ticking the Read Only box.

  9. Now go to http://localhost/folder_name and your Zen Cart website should be there.

Re: stuck on install on PC

I guess that is the difference between being totally Zenned and not Zenned at all/ I am cookbooking it from the manual becasue I have absolutely no idea what I am doing! And that is what it says to do! I am to set up a domain name - configure Apache-configure mercury and then prep to download the zencart.

it says to edit the file
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host
after that I should be able to use local host - but I really have not figured all that out either.
I guess i am at fiugring out how to get the explorer to work offline in this system.

I am afraid to skip a step for fear that things will no configure correctly and that I will have more trouble in the long run.

TIA

Re: stuck on install on PC

When you install XAMPP it is added to the hosts file.

I have never used the manual you refer to, so have no idea what it says. However it does seem to be unnecessarily complicating what should be a fairly straight forward procedure.

If you want to follow the manual then that's fine, but I can't help you with that.

My best advice is to follow the 9 step plain I laid out in my last post.

I have installed XAMPP and other kinds of offline web servers countless times, and installed countless numbers of PHP based programmes on both Intranet and Internet web servers.

Re: stuck on install on PC

Hi stitchnkitty,

The use of the domain name "www.example.com" is to simulate a real-world scenario when you eventually host your site on a remote host and to explain some basic internet knowledge.

If you have problems setting up the domain, you can save time by following Vger's suggestions to just use "localhost" instead of "www.example.com". That way, you do not have to edit the Windows hosts file anymore.

Thanks to Vger's instructions in the earlier post, you should be able to get going with the use of "localhost". If in doubt, just refer to the book's screenshots. Btw, you can also skip the Mercury/Thunderbird configuration to further reduce the time you need in setting things up while speeding up your time in learning Zen Cart.

Re: stuck on install on PC

I have learned that the advise of those who post is not to be taken lightly sooo that said
I have done Steps 1;2;3;4;and 6:clap:
5 was a bit beyond because I could not find where to proceed with that so I was afraid to go to 7 or 8 or 9 without 5 - :frusty:
