Limit payment type to a customer group (or customer)?

I don't accept checks or money orders in general - I rarely received them. However, I have a group of six folks that do pay later, either with checks, or one CC/PP payment for a group of orders.

Is there any way that I can allow only certain folks to use the "Check/Money Order" option? I'd like to either setup a group for them, and allow that option only for members of that group. Or, setup it up for them individually.

Write your custom logic for identifying which customers are allowed to use it, and wrap that into your payment module's update_status to set $this->enabled to true or false based on suitability.
