Refunds and Authorize.net

I have a 1.3.8a install...

I've been searching through the forums on refunds and authorize.net. I see a bunch of threads asking the same question with same answer - you do the refund from authorize.net.

But, I stumbled upon one post regarding how to implement this functionality from within Zen Cart:
[
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpost.php?p=619496&postcount=2](http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpost.php?p=619496&postcount=2)

So, apparently, this isn't widely known or even referred to and I just want to make sure it's OK to make this edit and will this code change be available in future zen cart releases?

Thank you for your time.

Re: Refunds and Authorize.net

The code was experimental, thus the disabling so it didn't need to be supported formally. Feel free to make the edit, but you're on your own when using it. (NOTE: I don't recall ever seeing anyone have any problems with it, so you're probably totally safe.)

It may or may not be officially included in future releases.

Re: Refunds and Authorize.net

When I did a refund from Authorize.net, I noticed that nothing is reflected in the Zen Cart admin panel about the refund (unlike PayPal express where the refund shows up in the admin panel).

I am just trying to find out if this is by design. Thanks.

Not so much "by design" as it is a technical limitation.
Very few gateways provide background updates to your store about transaction updates the way PayPal does.

Re: Refunds and Authorize.net

Three more questions and I think that will be it :dontgetit

  1. If doing the refund from authorize.net or any other payment gateway that doesn't update Zen Cart... What are most store admins setting the canceled/refunded product to? Are they just putting the order into "Update" with comments that the order was canceled and credit card refunded?

  2. Don't see any options to actually cancel an order or mark an order as "canceled / refunded" status. Is that only able to be done with an addon mod?

  3. Back to the original post question, if I was to modify the code to do the refund from within Zen Cart admin, would the refund be reflected in the admin orders screen?

Re: Refunds and Authorize.net

If you want to use "Update", that's fine. The "Update" status was intended to be used to re-enable expired downloads on orders, but you can use it for other purposes if you so desire, as long as you're aware that using that status will also affect any downloads included in orders set to that status.

You can add new order-status choices, via Admin->Localization->Order Status ... and then use those to set orders to a status of your choice. Note that the status is only a display flag. It doesn't trigger any other events in Zen Cart v1.3.x.

Doing a refund via the Zen Cart admin's interface to your payment module ONLY affects the actual financial part of the transaction. It DOES NOT update your Zen Cart order details other than perhaps adding a note to the comments/history.
It will NOT affect your order amounts or reporting. If you want to do that, you'll have to write your own custom code to adjust all the appropriate values and recalculate appropriate taxes and shipping fees, etc etc etc.

You may find some addons that attempt to aid in some of that. Be sure to test them all thoroughly before letting them loose on your precious live store data to ensure that they do exactly what you want them to do and nothing else.
