Free SSL Cert??? Anyone have experience with this? Is it good?

I was told about this SSL site from a friend, and I'd like to get some feedback from the forum, as I'm at the 'SSL shopping stage'.

startssl.com, is offering free SSL certs.

Paying for one isn't the issue, but they seem to be offering the same kind of protection as many others, and I'm wondering if this may be worth pursuing? Has anyone used them?

Any feedback would be great. I'd rather be safe now, then sorry later.

Cheers

It is not the same type of SSL or kind of protection. The free SSLs they are offering would not achieve PCI/DSS compliance and they specifically note they are not for stores and as stated....

They provide modest assurances and are meant to secure personal web sites, public forums or web mail.

So no, would recommend you keep shopping. Also note that to do this correctly you need to check out the PCI requirements for your SSL as determined by your volume of sales.

Hi Melanie,

Thanks for the input. I would've never know about PCI if you didn't mention it.

Thanks for this.

Dave :)

If you are using only GC and PayPal, PCI-DSS compliance is a non-issue.

I was thinking the same thing as I too use paypal and I might have a go with the latest GC mod so a ssl seemed a waste of money but thought if I could get a ssl cert it might give customers a bit more confidence. Thanks for the heads up

Setting aside PCI-DSS compliance for a moment, it's still a good idea to install an SSL cert so that your customers see it when they go through login, account creation, or checkout.
