Zen Cart can be used for any website and any industry that is allowed by the developers of the site (I think they ban ########## sites).

Some industries require additional module to make it easier on the customer. For example my websites in the signature are all based on Zen Cart some of them have custom work done to them.

Simple answer Sky is the limit with Open Source software.
