can someone with a bit of coding knowledge point me in the right direction?

Hey there guys and dolls.

i'm working on a website which will sell made to measure curtains (drapes in USAnglish i believe?).

The price of the curtains depends on the width and height of the window and it would be nice if there was someway that customers (pref without the need to sign-up) could just enter in the measurements once and it would be remembered so when they view a couple of different types of fabric the price for their measurements could be shown.

I'm wondering if anyone out there with one of those computer language adjusted minds can suggest to me the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance :)

Re: can someone with a bit of coding knowledge point me in the right direction?

You could hold the information in the PHP session variable for the duration of the visit, or even write it to a cookie so that they could use it when they come back later.

But this is only a small part of what you would need to do. Aside from building and processing a form to capture the data, you would need to do surgery on Zen Cart's pricing modules to use it, and the checkout to ensure that you keep doing so.

I think you're going to need some hands on help from somebody with a reasonable knowledge of Zen Cart's innards to make this work.

Hummm.... ok, then I'm off to the help wanted section to ask how much people would charge to help me. I'll keep an eye on this thread incase people want to answer here.

I dont know enough about window sizes to tell u for sure but i would think that you could just add it as an attribute to the curtains and edit the price module something I think isn't to hard.

Don't suppose anyone knows a good tutorial in this general area?

... except that there isn't an attribute type appropriate for a made-to-measure business model.

I know of a site with a similar requirement that used text attributes and then used javascript to try to read the contents and do the calculations.

A while back we took a slightly different approach and built an attribute that could hold quantities, but that was a big deal, and still didn't go as far as combining them.

I'm really unconvinced that the solution lies with trying to shoehorn this into attributes. Much better to collect the dimensions in dedicated fields and then work with them from there.

Re: can someone with a bit of coding knowledge point me in the right direction?

Ok cool. I've posted in the help wanted section but noone has replied so far.

I'm wondering if I should have a shot at this myself. I've dabbled with javascript before and I've made a really basic website which linked up with a database and had a form which inputted data etc in php so I'm not a complete novice but I don't suppose anyone would be able to direct me to any good info sources for figuring this all out myself? I'm a keen learner:)
