display catagories on main page?

Hi I have a large amount of catagories and subcatagories, and looking at it from a potential customers point of view it may be confusing how to find something

Is there any setting in admin that will display the top catagories on the home page, as well as on the sidebox?

Admin > Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories - Always Show on Main Page

... unless you are using a template that inhibits this feature.
