Odd email about domain name

I received the following email this morning and I'm not quite sure how to respond. Any suggestions?

Dear aicklenoptics:

We are Shanghai Chooke Network Information Technology Co., Ltd, which is the domain name register center in China. I have something need to confirm with you.

We have received an application formally, one company named "MAX (China) Holdings Limited" applies for the domain names(www.aicklenoptics.cn,www.aicklenoptics.com.cn,etc.) ,and the Internet keyword(aicklenoptics)on the internet August 28, 2009. We need to know the opinion of your company because the domain names and keyword may relate to the copyright of brand name on internet.

we would like to get the affirmation of your company, please contact us by telephone or email as soon as possible.

He could be trying to sell you domain names with different ccTLD's - particularly the .cn ccTLD . If you have no cause to register your domain in China, I'd probably tell him to get lost...

If your business has nothing to do with is then please do not worry about this. What if they are just out to collect information like seeing if your email is good to spoof?

I get emails everyday wanting to sell me something from China. maybe they are good suppliers to deal with, just rather not.

Oddly, this resembles an email I receieved just today.

Dear CEO,

We are the domain name registration organization in Asia, which mainly deal with international company's in Asia. We have something important need to confirm with your company.

On the March 22, 2010, we received a formal application from a company called "kuan International Holdings Ltd" who are applying to register "xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" as domain name and internet keyword.

After our initial examination, we found that the keyword and domain names applied for registration are as same as your company's keyword and trademark.We don't know whether you have any relation with them. These days we are dealing with it.If you do not know this company, we doubt that they have other purposes to buy these domain names.If they are your business partner or distributor in the asia,we will automatically confirm application from your business partner after this audit procedure. Now we have not finished the registration of "kuan International Holdings Ltd" yet, in order to deal with this issue better.Please contact us by email as soon as possible.

I don't see the harm in replying; I'll probably use a G-Mail account that isn't linked to my site or anything of worth. Maybe it is BS; I'm going to guess it's a way to get us to purchase domains, as suggested by ZC users, using the ever-effective appeal of fear.

There may be a legit registrar involved in it somewhere registering .cn domains, but it sure looks like a scam.

Check the .cn domains mentioned in direwolf's original post; they're still unregistered. Compare the website who sent direwolf's post with the one in your letter; they share some identical content.

This is a TOTAL scam... ignore it completely.

Unless you have LOTS of money, it is impossible to register every domain for every TLD. You will be looking at an annual cost in the region of £50,000...

Be happy with your domain(s). Getting traffic to them is elbow grease. It does not matter that much what your domain is called. As long as it's someting people can remember quite easily.
