main categories on home page

I want to show only some of the main categories on the front page of my site. At the moment there are too many and so it looks too cluttered. Am I able to disable some of the less important categories.

Can you give a link to see your current layout? Your design intentions will affect the best way to do what you are asking.

You could use the comments in /includes/templates/your_template/sideboxes/tpl_categories.php to make the minor categories have a classname of "category-minor", and in your stylesheet make a rule like

#indexHome .category-minor {display: none;}

This would hide those categories on the home page only.
