How did you arrive at your Tare Weight? Your Advice Please.

Hi,

We are setting up ZenCart and have gotten pretty far. But, the issue has come up of shipping weights. I know that we are supposed to add a tare weight to the weights of the products. I know where and how to set up the tare and where to put in the weights for the individual products. My question is this. We have many different products, some of them very light, and some of them very heavy. It seems like the packaging materials will vary greatly, and that a certain tare weight which would apply exactly for everything we carry might be hard to deduce. We wonder if anybody else has run into this and how they handled it? We are wondering how people determined what their tare weight was going to be.

If you have a reasonable estimate of the ratio of major sellers and the packaging they need, you can get a good idea of a tare that will average out to break even for you. It would be only if shipping cost is a critical factor for some small/light items that you would need to worry about getting them all spot on.

The admin has two tare rates, and several ways of calculating them, so you should be able to fine-tune your tares pretty well.

Configuration > Shipping/Packaging >
Package Tare Small to Medium - added percentage:weight 0:1
Larger packages - added packaging percentage:weight 0:3
