copy quantity discounts

(First, yes, I know about swguy's quantity discounts and think it is great. I just found myself in a position where I needed to copy lots of quantity discounts that used the default quantity discount system so did this. Actually, it works great in addition to swguy's mod which creates even more functionality. )

Here's a discount copier. Sceenshot is attached.

It works with the Quantity discounts that are used in the default Zen Cart and allows you to copy a discount to a product, a category, or the whole shop. Or delete a discount.

All the instructions are in the .zip file.

It's work in progress, so as ever with things that meddle with the database, BACK UP THE DATABASE first. But I haven't found any problems so far on a few Zen Cart installations. If you do then let me know please.

Choices are good! Once you think it's rock solid, consider submitting it to the Free Software Add Ons so people will be able to find it easily.

This was a very nice, simple way to do discounts... I'm very impressed. I backed up my database, installed it, and had applied all of the discounts that I wanted in a matter of 15 minutes or less.

I haven't encountered any problems yet. The only thing that seems a little odd is this:

I started off with about 300 products in my cart with no discounts. I initially edited one product (#29) to use as the copy source.

When I opened the discount copier, the graphical representation showed that there was one product that had a discount... but it was box 11. In the drop down box, the product still appeared with the correct label as #29.

In practical terms, it wasn't a problem (except perhaps that I couldn't use the diagram as a reference for which product # to choose as a source). Just thought it was worth mentioning.

I do have a question. Will this work with categories that have subcategories? For example:

Frames
-LP Frames
-CD Frames

It applied to categories but it did not apply to subcategories. This is OK. I just needed to change out my categories a little. Well worth it, considering all the time I saved! :D

I do want to ask if you have tried to make the discounts mix n match for a category? Say a customer wants 6 Black LP Frames, 6 Silver and 6 Gold. He would get the 18 pc price.

You cannot do this with the built in quantity discounts system; it's only per product.

You can do mix & match within a single parent category using the Quantity Discounts add on in the free software add ons.

What swguy says is very true. It sounds as if his mod may be the one you are looking for :-)

THe issue with the sub-categories is strange as I can't repeat it on a test server.

I have a lot more to do on my new site. Let me try again when I have the next category done. Maybe it was just me. It has happened before. :blush:

I installed, but couldnt get the discount to stick to any categories, or even 'whole shop'...only worked on individual products only..but still faster than conventional method.

@Vglide - oh I see what you mean now. Sorry was rushing a bit before.

In this set up

Cat A
-Sub B
-Sub C

Cat D
-Sub D
-Sub E

It will copy from D to the subcategory B.
If you copy from D to A it will not include the products in B and C. You'd have to copy from D to B and D to C. Or you'd have to nag me enough to write a few lines of code to change that behaviour. As I said it was written for a very specific set up which is why it is a post rather than an add-on :smile:

That is a bit surprising. I can't think of a reason why that would happen having looked at the code. You might try and re-install and see what happens. Then if you have the same error please get back in touch. A screenshot of the page just before you apply the changes would be helpful.

I have never added mods to zencart (my ex used to do it and now I pay someone else too), however as this mod looks like it's just uploading the files to the right locations would it be something a novice like me could do? Obviously I would backup database first but is it just a case of adding new files or is there more to this and will it work on 1.3.9h?

Basically I can set up qty discounts through zencart but if I have 50 items in one category I need to manually add the discount to each product and if one price changes I need to change all 50 one at a time - I am hoping this mod allows me to create or change the discount on one product and then copy these prices to the others in the same category - is this right?

I currently run 2 different discount programs. One is Quantity Discount from SWGuy. This one gives you the ability to do discounts per category. I use it for categories where I need to mix n match for customers to get discounts. I found it a little more complicated but, it works very well. Complicated means you have to know the correct category or product ids assigned to your products for it to work correctly. You have to do the assigning and then upload. Once it is uploaded, you would find it under Order Total. The second program is Discount Copier. This one allows you to set up one discount and then copy it to another product one by one, to a category one by one or to the whole shop. Once this one is uploaded you will find it under Catalog. I have only used it to a product one by one. I do like that it shows under product detail the Qty Discounts Off Price matrix. The one by SWGuy does not. Please note, you cannot use both discount programs in a category. I use 1.3.9e and had no problems. I hope this helps!

Actually Discount Copier was easy to install. That is exactly what I use it for. Some of my product is in 200 count cartons, some in 400 counts, etc. That is why I copy a 200 count product to another 200 count product. Gosh, I haven't thought about this for a while.

( Things to keep in mind. It was written for a specific install on 1.3.8a originally. It should work on any version of zen. But the reason that it is not an official module is that I have never got round to making it one. )

The install is very simple and does not effect anything else. No edits or database alterations. Just upload the files.

But the module is making major changes to some of the tables in the database when it copies the discounts so it is most definitely worth backing up the database before doing it. That can be done from phpMyAdmin or there is a mod called something like BackupMysql which I believe Dr Byte wrote.

This mod doesn't actually add any discount handling to Zen Cart. It uses the existing quantity discount system to set the discounts. What it allows you to do is set the discounts for one product and then copy the discounts to other products. Or to whole categories. This just makes adding discounts to your catalog much easier.

There should be no problem with using it in conjunction with SWGuys module. I have a client who does that quite successfully. The two modules add their discounts in different places as the order total is being calculated so can work together. Although you could get some weird effects if the discounts overlap and you get two discounts being applied. This isn't really to do with this module because, as I say, it just used the existing zen cart quantity discount system.
