Bad times.... Having major problems now.

Hi all,
Version of zencart is:
Zen Cart 1.3.8a
Database Patch Level: 1.3.8

Something very peculiar has happened, and I am not sure what.
I just got a paypal notification throught that someone had placed an order, and the paypal details give what looks like a legitimate order ID.
The customer exists in the customer area in the admin section, but there is no order.

So I signed up a test account, ordered something, paid with my personal paypal account, and sure enough, the same thing has occurred.

Now it gets stranger still. The site is sending no mail. I got no welcome email or order email (as a customer) nor did I get an order notification from the site as the store owner. The only way I knew about this was from the paypal email.

I am open to suggestions, but i have checked the server can send and receive mail ok.

Any help you guys can pass my way will be really really appreciated.

Thanks

You posted in the PayPal Express Checkout section. Are you using Express Checkout? Or are you using some other PayPal module?

Re: Bad times.... Having major problems now.

I know this is going to sound really stupid, but I am not totally sure. All I know is that it came on zencart as standard, and I needed to get an IPN token and enter call back URLs etc to make it work

Re: Bad times.... Having major problems now.

Okay, so you're using PayPal Website Payments Standard (aka IPN).

If you're getting payment emails from PayPal but not seeing those transactions in your store, then you're encountering one of 2 problems:

a) your PayPal account's IPN setting has been turned off so that the IPN notifications are no longer being sent

or

b) something in your hosting company's firewall or server configuration has been changed such that PayPal's server can't callback to your server to notify your store of the transactions. Related troubleshooting: http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.php/PayPal

Re: Bad times.... Having major problems now.

Thanks for the help so far. I have disables IPtables on the server for now, to prove the theory, and so far no joy.
The IPN notifiction URL is set correctly, and notifications are turned on.
So I am at a loss :(
Do you happen to know off hand where "Website Payments Preferences Automatic Return URL" in paypal is now set?

Re: Bad times.... Having major problems now.

Strike that, found where to do it, and still no joy.
I am clutching at straws here.

To confirm, firewall disabled, URLs set correctly in paypal, primary email checked, PDT token checked, and IPN is enabled.

:(

What happened when you turned on logging as explained in the article I mentioned?

Iptables is disabled, and this was working a week ago.

Your server's PHP configuration is preventing the use of fsockopen() when attempting to connect to the PayPal server to validate the incoming transaction notification.

Re: Bad times.... Having major problems now.

Thanks for the help so far, but I do appear to have fsockopen enabled. Interestingly, I just tried to telnet paypal and I get this:
root@cp [/etc/httpd/conf]# telnet paypal.com 443
Trying 66.211.168.209...
telnet: connect to address 66.211.168.209: Connection refused

Could this be symptomatic of our problem?

Yes.

So, it's not fsockopen() specifically. It sounds like PayPal is refusing your connection. Maybe your server's IP is blocked by them?

Re: Bad times.... Having major problems now.

In a weird way, I hope that is the case, and it is easily remedied. I have raised a support ticket with them to see if that is the case. If its not, I am totally baffled.
