If this has been posted before, my apologies. Is it possible in the admin area to charge shipping based on item dollar value on some items and charge shipping by weight for other items? Thank you

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

What determines the difference between the Products charged by weight and Products charged by price?

What happens when both are in the cart?

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

Hi. I would like shipping of coins to be by weight and currency to be by dollar value of the item. Right now I have both set up by dollar value but I can't justify an item worth a dollar or two to cost the same for shipping as a bank note.

Let's pretend that I have never seen your site in my life and have no earthly clue what you sell and no idea if you mean that you sell "Coins and Bills" or what ...

Could you type really really slow here and/or give an URL to the different Products that you have and how to manage the shipping?

And do explain what to do when both Product types are in the same order ...

First of all, I thought this was a place to get help, not sarcasm and ridicule. If it is not possible, just say so.

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

Okay ... let's try it in a serious way ...

I know nothing about your site ... you are talking about "shipping of coins to be by weight and currency to be by dollar value" are you meaning that you sell "coins" and "dollar bills" of some nature and that each has a different manner of shipping that you are trying to combine a "product weight shipping" with a "product value shipping" into some type of recalculated shipping method?

What determines which is in the cart on the two kinds of products?

I really know nothing about your site or what you sell and while it may be crystal clear to you, as you know what you sell, I do not and need you to provide some type of clarity in order to help you on this ...

Meanwhile, sorry you get bent when anyone tries to add some light hearted humor to the discussion ... I just really need to know more about what it is you are trying to do and I am sorry if you take that the wrong way ...

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

Lets try this again on the right foot. Site is https://www.zwiggystreasures.com. I sell coins and bank notes. I have not put a lot of coins in yet due to this shipping problem. Shipping is poresently set up by zone and dollar value of the item only. It gets very expensive to sell a dollar coin with the shipping costs set up the way they are. I wish to calculate shipping on the coins by weight and on the bank notes by dollar value of the item. If both show up in the cart, shipping needs to be calculated by the most expensive method of the 2. I am sorry if I came across a little harsh but this whole shipping thing is getting frustrating. I do have the book but it is very little help for non straight forward problems.

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

Well ... we all have an off day ... and lord knows shipping has been directly linked to baldness and high blood pressure ...

What would happen if you had two shipping modules ... Zone Rate Coins and Zone Rate Dollars ...

Presently, your Zone Rate is set on Weight ... but you want also the same thing for Zone Rate by Price for the Dollar Bills that you sell ...

Will that always be higher? As in would testing if 1 or more Dollar Bills are in the cart then you would want to ship based on Price?

Or, is this a mixed issue where some orders the weight of the Coins makes that the "more expensive" method and some orders the Price of the Dollar Bills makes that the "more expensive" method ...

Is there something to distinguish the Coins from the Dollar Bills in the products table that can be tested for? Something like products_model or manufacturers_id? Or if you are not using those fields ... could they be used as the "testing" for what is in the cart?

On the Dollars for the shipping cost, is this a flat rate or again a zone rate? and is it a scaled zone rate or a single value per zone?

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

Hi
My zone rates are based on price, not weight at the present time. There is nothing to distinquish them in the products table. This is going to be a mixed issue as people may buy some of each and my problem is secure shipping. Under a certain value, I can send by regular mail and over a certain value I would send by express or registered mail. The notes are not a real problem as many can be shipped for one price as they weigh very little. Coins are a problem as the weight goes up quickly and so do shipping costs irregardless of value. Because I am in Canada I also have problems with flat rate envelopes as they will not allow metal outside of Canada. Are you starting to see the baldness and high blood pressure. It may just be easier to do everything by weight and fill in higher weights for currency values than to try to work with zones and multiple shipping tables based on zones. In other words if I want to charge a higher rate for 1 item because it is expensive, raise the weight so the cost goes up. Hopefully it will work that way and the cart will add the weights to get the shipping costs based on the value which is fudged and the actual weight which is correct. Let me have your thoughts if this work around will work?:smile::smile:

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

Would the Canada Post shipping module work for you?
http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&products_id=78

Perhaps customize it for a minimum weight?

Re: shipping by dollar value or weight

I have found that very little from Canada Post works. There website does not agree with actual post office cots a lot of the time. It also does not allow for any modifications or changes. Many Ebayers do not like Canada Post add ons either. I think I will try the weight variations to see how that works. Thank you for your assistance.
